The House

El Calamar Xigante

El Calamar Xigante is a mixture of the castellan word calamar for squid and the Gallego word  Xigante for Giant. The squid was our lucky animal since we met as seafarers and the language mix is a reminder of the cultural blend of our family and the fusion of old and new in our house.

El Calamar Xigante was known to the villagers of A Insua (our part of Carnota) as “Casa pollo” (Chicken house). The horreo dates back to 1782 and so we assume do parts of the house. In 2022 we started exhaustive revonations that stripped the ancient farm house to it’s stone walls. Filled with sustainable insulation, floor cavities- and heating, modern technology and anti-allergic wall coating it will hopefully last us another 240 years! A structure with solar panels in our vegetable garden produces most of our energy and doubles as wood storage.

We cleared most of the finca from overgrowth and preserved old fruit trees and an ancient stone house (caseta) as we could.

The skilled local stone masons refreshed the old walls and floors and added new ones where needed. We tried to incorporate some contemporary designs with the traditional layout using mostly natural material as wood and stone.

A single unit in our village

Each room is a single unit in our village, a separate room entrance and a private terrace give you space for rest.

The comedor and lounge

In the comedor/lounge that is attached to the main house breakfast and dinner are served. It is the heart and hub of the house and connects our family living with our guests.

Sit down, unwind and let your holidays begin…

The garden

On the top of our hill garden you can find a sitting terrace nestled into the edge of the forest. While listening to our water feature you can watch the waves break and on clear days you will see the light house of Fisterra.

Hear the birds sing and the bees hum and let your mind wander…

Athmosphere...

Floor heating, wall insulation and double flux ventilation keep our rooms warm and dry all year around.

Sustainable renovation

We did our best to renovate our house with sustainable material and recover old beams to build new furniture

Green energy

A total of 44 m² of solar panels and 4 m² of solar heating tubes stand tall in our vegetable garden to supply green energy for your stay

Farm to table

Our vegetable garden and fruit trees provide ecological greens with a low-emission footprint. We are working on growing more and better each year.
